Tyus D. Williams – Ph.D. Candidate and Science Communicator

About Me

I'm Tyus Williams, a Ph.D. candidate at UC Berkeley, published author, and passionate advocate for our planet. My journey in ecology has led me to explore the fascinating intersections between human society, domestic cats, and their wild cousins.

My Research and Impact

At UC Berkeley, I dive deep into how our human world shapes the behavior of domestic cats and their ecological impacts. This research isn't just about understanding – it's about finding harmony between our urban environments and the natural world.

As an NSF Graduate Research Fellow, I'm committed to pushing the boundaries of our knowledge in ecology and conservation. My work aims to uncover insights that can help us coexist more sustainably with the animals that share our planet.

From Academia to Children's Literature

My passion for wildlife extends beyond the lab and field. I'm the proud author of "Big Cats (A Day in the Life)," published by Neon Squid. This children's book brings the world of big cats to young readers, fostering an early appreciation for these magnificent creatures. I'm honored that it received a Kirkus Star for best animal children's book of 2022, with notable reviews from Kirkus Reviews, Goodreads, and MacMillan Publishers.

Sharing Science with the World

Science comes alive when shared, that's why I've dedicated myself to science communication. I've built a community of over 31,000 followers on TikTok where I offer a unique blend of scientific insights and critical perspectives on the human experience in the natural world. From explaining complex ecological concepts to showcasing the beauty of wildlife, I strive to make science accessible and engaging for everyone.

My mission also extends beyond social media. I regularly appear on podcasts and at speaking engagements, discussing everything from the latest research in ecology to the challenges of conservation in the 21st century. These platforms allow me to dive deeper into topics, sparking curiosity and fostering a greater appreciation for our natural world.

My Motivation

I see myself as a guardian for those without a voice to defend themselves. By spreading information about the inner workings of our beautiful planet, I hope to inspire curiosity and action in others. To me, science is a tool, and it's only as good as the individual who wields it. I aim to be someone who uses this tool with pure intentions, always in service of our planet and its inhabitants.
